"The Ashgrovian lifestyle"

Ashgrove has all the qualities that I admire in a suburb for your health, café culture and casual dining. The Ashgrovian lifestyle just 5 km from the CBD with cafes, leafy green streets and sporting fields has something to offer local residents including families and professionals. It’s a suburb where new generations are appreciating the urban amenity and are choosing to raise their own families in Ashgrove too.

I am excited about the year ahead and the opportunities that are to be seized and other that need to be created.

"Best Inner City Family Suburb"

This suburb provides very good private schools (Marist College Ashgrove and Mount St. Michael's) and has a very friendly and leafy green feel. The "avenues" area provides a good neighbourly spirit and Main Ashgrove (around Ashgrove Avenue) provides a convenient area with ample green space and parkland.
Pros
  • Many nice Cafes emerging
  • best schools, shopping centres, all medical centres, sport facilities, park areas, Brisbane CBD in 7 min by car, Airport 20 Min by City Bypass.
  • Close to everything, but just far enough from the CBD.

"More convenient than exciting"

- Lovely parks and green streets.
- Although there is a 'village' it doesn't actually have any village feel to it due to two excessively busy roads passing straight through it.
- No market on the weekend.
- Pretty much nothing happening after 9pm. Last one to go home please turn the lights off.
- 90% chance of sharing a beer with your neighbors.
Pros
  • Excellent footpaths for goats
  • Close to everything, but just far enough from the CBD.
Cons
  • No public pool
  • No decent local pubs
  • No nightlife
  • Minimal cafes and restaurants
  • No edible food available

"A great suburb with a great community!"

Ashgrove is a wonderful suburb with a great community!! With a main Brisbane road (Waterworks Road) running through the middle of the suburb many people get turned off. However, traffic noise is not an issue with the side streets. In these streets you will find great houses with large backyards some surrounded by bush land/ creeks and great walking paths.
Pros
  • Great walking tracks
  • Beautiful wildlife and creeks
  • Great sporting areas & ovals
  • best schools, shopping centres, all medical centres, sport facilities, park areas, Brisbane CBD in 7 min by car, Airport 20 Min by City Bypass.
  • Close to everything, but just far enough from the CBD.
Cons
  • Some areas can be subject to flooding
  • Main road is very busy
  • No nightlife
  • All buses in late afternoon and full of school kids - no room to sit down for public transport go-ers

"Busy, yet quiet burb"

I have never lived in Ashgrove, but have friends who have owned and lived in a house there for over 35 years. Also my sister and BIL owned a house on Waterworks Road for many years. What I like about Ashgrove is the wonderful, old (but many are restored) Queenslander houses with huge backyards, which make you feel like you are in a country town somewhere even though it is very close to the city. The only drawback would be Waterworks Road and Jubilee Terrace, which are both extremely busy roads and always filled with vehicles. I would not like to live on these roads. Everything is close by and there is a really good community spirit.
Pros
  • Close to everything, but just far enough from the CBD.
Cons
  • Main Road is busy but quiet in your backyard as most below street level. Must see to believe

"Old fashioned Family living"

A beautiful family friendly suburb only 5klm from the CBD. This is the place you always imagined to bring up a family in. The area is filled with gorgeous Queenslander Homes or "Ashgrovians" as often referred to. It boasts peaceful tree lined streets, lots of parks and bike ways, a glorious creek meandering through the suburb and great schools. Good shops and boutique Coffee spots for the weekend nearby. Great place to live. Its often said locally that once you move here, you are hesitant to leave. The residents are very friendly and caring to their neighbors. All this also makes for healthy long term property growth too. Ashgrove is very hard to beat as one of the greatest suburbs in Brisbane!

"The Serenity"

This suburb is an absolute Gem for "Great Brisbane Lifestyle"! Ashgrove is a leafy peaceful suburb at the foot hills of the "Taylor Ranges" and Mt Cootha while only 4 klm to the CBD. It has lots of lovely Parks and Bike tracks with pretty Enoggera Creek meandering through it. You can get views to the Mountains or views to the City or both! It has good local shops and eateries and supported by a regular bus route. I love the strong cool Northerly Breezes and abundant Flora and Fauna. You need to like birds to live here! Ashgrove should be voted Brisbane No 1 best suburb for young family living and investing for capital growth! It also boasts some of the top Schools in Brisbane too. Those who finally discover here, are hesitant to leave, we know why. Don't hesitate if you are thinking of moving here as property prices are rising fast with many selling well over the Million. This is definitely lifestyle living at its best!.

"Brisbanes best place to live."

So close to the city but feels like it's so far away.

Parks everywhere you look, great people, fantastic schools, easy to commute,
A brand new Woolworths and a new Coles down the road.

It really does have everything you could want.

"Friendly and convenient"

Ashgrove has a lot of lovely old houses, wide leafy streets and beautiful parks everywhere. It has a Coles, Woolworths and Aldi, and a few coffee shops and restaurants. The houses are gracious and old, with good proportions, real family homes as opposed to workers cottages. There is a library, private and public schools which score extremely well on Naplan, doctors, banks - everything you need really. On the downside, it could use more footpaths, more family friendly restaurants and more 'vibe' - it is unfortunate that Waterworks Rd cuts through the main shopping area, making it not very pedestrian friendly. On the plus side, the fact that Waterworks Rd cuts through Ashgrove means the public transport (buses) is excellent and frequent.

"Dont forget to include Ashgrove in your shopping list (shh. dont tell too many people its great value!)"

The nicest things about Ashgrove are simple - clean, green, quiet, good people and quality of life. The schools in Ashgrove are great, there are a lot of different schools to choose from, including private and public, daycare and alternate care. The medical centre in West Ashgrove is old fashioned (service) and the people who seem to live in the suburb never really leave. Prices are very good considering locality to the city and other parts of Brisbane.

Shopping - well you can get most of your day to day shopping in the main precint - Ashgrove - Coles & Woolworths - if you want more of a deli - village style experience head to Paddington Central - for all your foodie delights and even a massage at the beauty therapy salon.

Ashgrove is ideally located to the Milton Business District - handy for new comers to Brisbane who have relocated for work - this is where alot of businesses are opting to set up their corporate offices to avoid the CBD hassles.

Most expats love Ashgrove because of the quality of life and quick access to facilites.
Country folks love it, most of Ashgrove backs onto natural bushland - and is only 5km to the CBD
Aussies love Ashgrove because it's the essence of the much envied Aussie Lifestyle.
Kids love it - mum and dad can get home quicker to spend time with them

Not so good things... well there's always one or two things people will pick up on. When we have heavy downpour then be sure to keep your yard clean and have good drainage - keep tree's safe distance from houses as in the past there has been some pretty wild weather.

Why is Ashgrove so good? It come's down to the people, that live in the area and make the area a home.

If you're looking for somewhere safe, secure, happy, green, clean, tree-hugging, social friendly, convenient - then Ashgrove may be for you!

Welcome to Ashgrove - it's just beautiful!

"Great place to live"

Ashgrove has many parks, walking tracks and playgrounds. It is great for families with children. Ashgrove State School is excellent and lives up to its reputation as the best school in the area. Great sporting facilities and clubs. Many tree lined streets with character houses which have been retained in some areas. These character areas are quite unique to Ashgrove. Quick, easy commute to city. Great neighbourhood spirit where you know your neighbours by name, and look out for each other. Have lived here for over 10 years and would not live anywhere else. Hard to find a nicer suburb, 5km to city.

"From a Real Estate Agent's Perspective"

Working in the area for the past 10 years as a real estate agent for Harcourts City and as a local resident growing up in the area, I have been a "raving fan" of Ashgrove for a very long time. My sister and I attended high school in the area (Mt St Michael's College, Ashgrove) and my mother remains a local resident - living just off Ashgrove Avenue. The area offers a wonderful family friendly lifestyle with block sizes larger than surrounding suburbs (back yard for the kids is becoming rare in inner-city Brisbane), recent developments of major super markets for all family-buying needs as well as provides some of Brisbane's finest primary and secondary education. There is also an abundance of public transport and safe walking routes to parks, schools and local businesses. I love the area and work with buyers on a daily basis who are just waiting for the opportunity to buy in one of Brisbane's best hot spots.
Pros
  • Larger block sizes than surrounding areas (backyard for the kids to play)
  • Family friendly with wonderful shopping and retail facilities
  • Wonderful primary and secondary education - kids can walk to school

"Banks St Reserve"

Owned here for 10 years and back onto the reserve. Rented here originally before getting married and wanted to buy here. Waking up to birds each morning is a bonus, save for the odd crow. Both neighbours are good friends who we socialise with them and the kids play together between yards. I work in the city and the drive is about 15 minutes. Spoilt for supermarkets, not that I enjoy grocery shopping. Coming from the country I really appreciate how leafy the suburb is. It sometimes is so quiet it's a bit eerie, thinking you are in the middle of a city. My folks think so to when they come to town.

It is a lovely place to live and my kids will have to bury me in the reserve somewhere, someday, because I can't see myself moving.
Pros
  • Good amenity in the suburb.

"Quiet & Leafy"

Ashgrove is a very quiet suburb with plenty of schools to choose from. The Woolworths Centre and the other Coles centre add great shopping to the area. You wouldn't believe you are only 5km to the city (until you take in the magnificent city views!).

Ashgrove is very high up meaning that it is no chance of ever flooding and has proven to be a great choice for young families looking to settle down in a great neighbourly suburb.

"It doesnt get any better!"

Nothing compares to Ashgrove when it comes to a friendly leafy suburb close to the city. It has everything particularly if you are raising a Family. The area has all the facilities you could ask for and is safe for kids. Most who buy here never leave, so Real Estate prices are solid and that means great investment. Forget "Green Acres" or the river, Ashgrove is the Place to be! I will stay forever. So many parks, relaxing bike paths and leafy walking tracks, pretty winding creeks and beautiful Mountain backdrops, it is very hard to beat. Gets my vote for the best Suburb in Brisbane.

"High & Dry - no flooding"

The right side would be the Brisbane city - Ocean side because of the nice breeze and the view to the city. The wrong side would be the hinterland facing side, as it can be extremely hot and there is very little view to the city.

Brisbane CBD in 7 min by car, Airport 20 Min by City Bypass.

All up it might be a busy road but all amenities are very tempting. The property prices most definitely will climb after Brisbane flooding. Surprisingly quiet are the backyards as they mostly below the street level.

Ashgrove is close to the best schools (state & private), shopping centres (Coles, Woolworth, ALDI), all Banks, Post, all medical centres, sport facilities, park areas.

Very save for children, very low crime rate.

"Is there a right and wrong side of Waterworks Road?"

We are thinking of buying in Ashgrove but some locals tell me there is a "right" and a "wrong" side of Waterworks Rd, i.e. the 'Avenues' is the "right" side and you will have to pay more for a home here than the streets on the other side. Is this true? Could some ashgrove locals enligten me?

"A great place for families"

Ashgrove is Brisbane's top suburb for families. The parks, the schools, and the large blocks are ideal. But, for a single gal like me, there is nothing. If you are young and single you have to look elsewhere. If you are a student, it is too far to travel. Again, don't get me wrong, if you are raising a family there is no better place to be. Looking at the reviews there is nothing for me to add, other than what I have said. I just noticed that no one has made this point.

"A wonderful place to raise the kids"

This is a safe and affluent part of Brisbane, with lots of families and great schools. It is only a short drive to the city. The locals are very friendly and there are plenty of parks for the kids to enjoy.

"One of my favourite neighbourhoods"

This is one of my favourites. The area is one of Brisbane's more established and well-heeled neighborhoods, with lots of families. There are a lot open spaces, and it is a short commute to work. Great place for kids. High recommended.

"Ashgrove: like the old days"

The best things about Ashgrove are the parks and trees. There are many children and the suburb is very safe for the kids to wander from house to house like we did when I was growing up in the seventies. On the whole people are very neighbourly and our street has parties two or three times a year - Christmas, to celebrate a new baby, to welcome a new family. There is something for everyone in Ashgove!

"Fantastic place to raise a Family"

We moved to Ashgrove with our two young boys almost two years ago after living in Paddington QLD for 5 years. Ashgrove is quiet and leafy with mostly period homes and some new contemporary homes springing up here are there. What attracted us was the number of parks and the great reputation of the local schools. I cannot speak highly enough about Ashgrove State School. It really is a wonderful school with great facilities and dedicated passionate teaching staff.
There are are range of restaurants and cafes in Ashgrove and you are only a short drive to some of the best eateries in Queensland at Paddington.
Ashgrove is close to the CBD while maintaining anough distance for air quality and peacefullness.
Probably the best thing about Ashgrove is the community spirit. People you meet in the street are friendly and neighbours are helpful. There are lots of families with children and our kids have made many friends in the area. I must mention the Ashgrove Rugby Club (GPS). This club has over 1000 members making it one of the largest clubs in Australia. I have never played rugby and didn't know the first thing about the game but the club welcomed us and my eldest son is back for his second season and loves it. It is a very social and well managed club that we can walk to from our home. The presence of great facilites and people make this a fantastic place to raise a family.

"One of Brisbanes largest suburbs!"

Many are suprised to hear that Ashgrove is in fact one of the largest suburbs in all of Brisbane. Great public transport, close to city, every public facility minus a hospital you could think of. Lots of parks.
Retail wise its not much chop. No major shopping centres, you'll need to travel to the city or Indro or maybe Enoggerra if you want a big centre. Restaurants/bistro's have avoided Ashgrove like the plague, for whatever reason. Forget the idea of any type of nightlife - I consider that a bonus. No drunks wondering the streets at 4am. Another downside is when you get quotes for anything the prices is jacked up because your in "Ashgrove".
Ithaca Creek runs through/alongside Ashgrove. It has running and bike trakcs along large parts of it. The creek does flood during very bad storms so be aware if buying near it.
Plenty of schools, both private and public and whilst it has Waterworks Road running though the high street you can walk around it pretty easily. Unfortunately, alot of Ashgrovians are still addicted to thier cars and even the shortest trips which could be walked, are not. As result parking in the main retail area is not very good. The high street has the potential to have a village type atmophere, but its still developing. We have a great butcher and fruit shop. Theres a bakery, but it not outstanding. All the banks, post office, gym, cafe's etc. The florist is also very good.
Ingore the fact that the High Street looks like 1985. It needs a facelift, but it works.
I've been in Ashgrove for 3 years. We have two kids at primary school and we both work in the CBD. We have a dog who gets plenty of exercise at the local park. Traffic in Ashgrove can be bad, pending on where you live.Peak hour is the worst. Lots of rat runners using back streets - but on the up side on weekends, even some of the busier roads are fairly quiet, There are some great little pockets of homes tucked away - these are the ones to hunt out. Be sure to ask others about the location of the house your considering. More and more real estate agents are pushing the boundries of Ashgrove out to areas which aren't actually in Ashgrove - but the name helps to sell homes. so buyer beware! - This could affect resale. Parking around some of the units can be a challenge, so consider this also.
All in all, Ashgrove is a great place to raise a family with all the convienences of city living on what are traditionally big blocks with lots of trees and friendly neighbours.

"Ashgrove is an elevated leafy subrub"

Ashgrove is elevated and some home sites even have city skyline views. In my opinion Ashgrove and New Farm are the cities hottests suburbs for bargains. In Ashgrove you can buy properties at good prices when you think about how close you really are to the city.

Ashgrove homes site sell between 600-800K on large 600-1000 sqm alotments!

8.5/10 is my rating of this suburb
