"Eclectic"

There are pockets of Bedford that are run down and feel unsafe. Walking around the suburb is reasonably pleasant during the day, but not recommended at night time. Bordered by Walter Rd on the north and Broun Ave on the south, traffic is constant. Small parks are dotted throughout Bedford, however, always expect graffiti, dog poo or rubbish to be part of the park or playground experience. If you are looking at living in Bedford, also have a look at Dianella and Inglewood which are definitely a step up from Bedford in terms of quality homes, a great neighbourhood environment, cleanliness and safety.
LaMaisonBedford
LaMaisonBedford ive never seen dog poo or rubish at our local park? not sure where ur looking, maybe morley side...? Inglewood is definately a step up, but also a HUGE step up in price so its all give and take isnt it....
Im just a bedford fan perhaps and live in a good area/street.... (Drummond near inglewood)

emilleinoz walking is definately safe at night! i walk around the area every night and never see anybody else... Dianella's houses are not as characterful as Bedford's and Inglewood is much nicer you are right but its about $300-500k more per house! Nicest parts of Bedford are closer to Beaufort Street (rather than Walter Rd) and closer to Inglewood (rather than Morley)

ceebee7 We are actually bordered by Beaufort St on the south side. I know I'm being picky, but then so are you.
Dog poo and rubbish? Is Inglewood really a step up? Maybe it's because we fully renovated our house into a four x two. Left six walls standing, so really its all brand new with the 1951 look to it. Love it. Love the suburb.
Inglewood indeed! And finally find us a suburb that is completely safe during the day let alone at night! Maybe read the police stats on crime in different areas and see how well Bedford performs. It rates right along with your very effluent sorry, affluent suburbs. Good comments above, no not yours Jenae! Hey one more thing! Can't help myself once I get going. DIANELLA A STEP UP FROM BEDFORD! I'll have what she's having!

Jenae There were 4 break and enters in our street in 5 months and two of our neighbours had their cars covered in eggs. The two parks closest to us (we have four young children so we frequented them almost daily) were always subject to graffiti. As soon as it was cleaned off (which the council would attend to quite quickly) it would be replaced with more. The playground equipment itself was great. Our walks to and from the park more often than not ended with hosing off a child's shoe to rid it of dog poo. We would also take a plastic bag (and tongs!) with us and picked up any rubbish that we came across. Yes LaMaisonBedford - we were a few hundred metres from Walter Rd, closer to Morley, so perhaps this made all the difference. Ceebee7 - I'm glad you like living in Bedford. I simply commented on my personal experience - it's great that you have not had a similar experience! Perhaps I shouldn't have shared my experience? My comments were not intended to offend. I am less interested in how much character my house has than I am in a family friendly neighbourhood. The location was great, but perhaps we were in the 'wrong' part of Bedford. We have since moved and love living where we are.

ceebee7 My sincere apologies for any offense I have caused you. I leaped to the defense of the suburb and obviously didn't think it offensive at the time. My intention was to compare suburbs or oranges with oranges if you will.
I'm sorry you have had all that trouble in Bedford and can now fully understand why you wrote what you did.
I did some research into that particular part of the suburb and you are correct the crime rate in that area closer to morly does seem to attract the unwanted elements of society. This also reflects on the cost of housing in that neck of the woods according to REIWA. I'm glad you are happy in your chosen suburb and wish you all the best. Kind regards, ceebee.

"Great great suburb"

Having been a commited renter around subi, mt lawley, inglewood, leederville, northbridge etc.. areas for all of my 20s I moved to Bedford 10 years ago and have to say, it was so worth saving to get into the suburb. As far as location you cant beat it, its close enough to get everywhere and far enough to be peaceful. There are great access routes in every direction, great schools - both public and private, walking distance to galleria and inglewood strip. I guess one of the highlights is the proximity to the city and the public transport options. It takes 15-20 minutes door to door to get to town on the 66 express. It is in essence Inglewood without the million+ pricetags and the pokey block sizes ;-). I think its potential has yet to be fully realised.. although with the recent spate of investment and popping up of fancy 'McMansion' type developments on our street.. I think the secret is slowly getting out..

As my neighbour has been saying for the last 10 years.. "once you are in, why would you leave? its just so easy and convenient living in Bedford..and you will never be able to buy back in"

The other big pro of Bedford is there is a plethera of housing styles to suit everyone.. old doer uppers, new houses and those which have been beautifully restored.. and finally established trees.. something you just dont see in the suburban sprawl. Love it!

Oh and I almost forgot.. it has "Salisbury day care centre".. possibly the best day care centre for miles and miles... ask anyone whos kids go there and anyone whos trying to get in!!

"Bedford is the best kept secret of WA. And we love it that way."

We live in Birrkett St. We have a friendly safe area. We are fortunate enough to live on the old 1/4 acre.
Traffic is mainly quiet with a bit of through traffic at prime times. Access to the Beaufort St cafe's just minutes away and the City is just 8 minutes if you catch some green traffic lights.

"Affordable character close to the CBD"

Bedford is one of Perth's 'best kept secrets' as far as I am concerned. Its only 6 km from the CBD along Beaufort Street and it still has character. If you like older style houses (1940's-1950's), close to the City at still (relatively) affordable prices, I think bedford's the place. Any suburb closer to the CBD is substantially more expensive (Inglewood, Mount Lawley, Highgate) and as Perth grows further, locations closer to the CBD would become more expensive - and this trend has already 'reached' Inglewood, so the progression to Bedford and neighbouring Bayswater is only a matter of time.

Cons
  • some areas of bedford is nicer than others

"Great place to live"

I have lived inner city for a number of years and moved to Bedford 12 months ago. I find the location great and the facilities just keep growing with the restaurants moving up Beaufort Street. It is a suburb that is small and unique and only gets better with a lot of renovation and redevelopment. It is easy to get into the city if you have to and heaps of public transport is available. It is amazing how quite it is and the neighbors are always friendly and keep an eye out. There are some amazing renovations going on and I believe this is a suburb that will be sought after because of it's uniqueness, size and spirit.

"well located, great value, friendly neighbourhood"

I have lived in Bedford for a few years now and its a great place to live. Everything you need if nearby or easy to get to. It's got schools, kindergartens, doctors, restaurants, cafes, fast food outlets, Coles, pubs, 24 hours delis and its close to the city or the Galleria. There are various bus routes to town and a taxi ride is less than $20 when needed. There are many parks, footy and cricket grounds and not far to golf courses and swimming pools. The streets are in a grid system which makes it easy to ride or walk around. Most major sporting grounds, the casino and even the beach are all within easy reach.
There is a good mix of housing with many character houses on big blocks or new homes on smaller blocks
