"Most beautiful suburb - exemplifies the very best that Melbourne has to offer the modern well-financed family"

Camberwell has all the qualities that the modern family could ever want in a suburb - every facility at your doorstep, without being spoilt by party-goers and nightclubs. The streets are beautiful and tree-lined and the houses in the suburb are a mix of beautiful heritage and modern flair. It is quite expensive to live in Camberwell but with good justification. The suburb offers excellent amenities, restaurants, transport, many recreation facilities and parks, large blocks, a wide selection of high performing schools, any shopping option you could ever want, excellent quick access to the city, great resell value, safe streets and a great neighbourly spirit. I haven't known another suburb with the same style, heritage and tranquility, without compromising any desirable modern amenity.
Pros
  • Fantastic schools
  • Highly accessible & excellent transport

"Don't believe the rankings! Living in Camberwell is brilliant"

I have been living in Camberwell since 2012 and I am glad we chose Camberwell over Kew, Hawthorn East, Balwyn. Public transport is excellent. Which other suburb has so many train stations within walking distance to most houses? In 10 years time with the explosion in population, you will NOT be able to drive around comfortably. So living in Kew just because it is 7-8 kms from the CBD holds no water. It used to take me 1 hour in 2010, in 10 years time make that 2 hours.

While buying a house can be an expensive prospect, renting is still very affordable. You have so many parks and walking/cycling trails (e.g. Anniversary trail along Fordham Avenue) that you won't mission having a large backyard. Also, the recent changes to zoning laws and with more townhouses being built, we should hopefully see house prices becoming a bit more affordable to those looking to upgrade/move up the ladder.

To sum up, Camberwell is a safe suburb, lots of shopping and places to eat, excellent transport options, choice of good primary and secondary schools, parks and reserves (Frog Hollow, Fordham gardens, Highfield, Lynden, Willison, Wattlepark and more).

"Camberwell is definitely the best suburb in Melbourne!"

I have lived in many suburbs in Melbourne both east and west. I believe that Camberwell is definitely one of the friendliest suburbs. The shopping is fantastic too - absolutely love the Sunday market and the Camberwell food market is fabulous too. The whole suburb has a wonderful ambience. There are some really fantastic restaurants, great coffee and love the Rivoli.

"Camberwell - simply the best BUT very expensive! Make that Very Very Expensive!"

After living in rented accommodation for several years in Kew and Hawthorn East the time came for us to finally buy a house. We were keen on Kew and Hawthorn. However, we found that when we liked a house and school, we didn't like the street and lack of transport and lacks of shops nearby. In other words we couldn't find a house that ticked ALL our boxes. So we decided to look at Camberwell. Can't ever imagine how we overlooked this gem of a suburb! Seriously, I doubt any other suburb offers so much - fantastic houses, large blocks of land, transport - 3 rail stations for 1 suburb, trams, shops, parks, lots and lots of tree lined streets, one of the best state primary schools in Victoria, SAFE - close to the CBD - the list is endless. I have to say all this comes at a price and houses are very expensive. BUT, it offers the best value for money as no other suburb in my opinion comes a close second when you are fussy and have pages of boxes to tick!

"A good enviroment to raise kids"

It seems affluence is sought for but not obtained here, everyone is a wanna-be but not there yet! Courtesy is near non existent, on the roads, in shops, carparks, on footpaths and as a mother with a pram and toddler everywhere I go, it's more obvious to me than others I suspect. Heaps to do with children and access with public transport excellent.

Polly83
Polly83 I would have to agree with you. My husband and I purchased a house in Hawthorn East in 2010 and we border on Camberwell and I must say I have never in my life come across an area so full of rude obnoxious people.
It is mainly populated by crusty old cardigan wearing anglosaxons and seriously lacks in good restaurants and cafes, is full of garbage overpriced shops, lacks in ethnic diversity, class and has an overall dull vibe.
We are a young professional couple with a little one and and we are constantly asked if we are renting? The assumption seems to be that one must be a daggy redneck pretending to be rich I guess to live in such an 'exclusive' part of town.

We grew up in Hawthorn in which unlike camberwell, the truly affluent reside and people seem to be so much friendlier and tolerant.

Wouldn't recommend Camberhell...

kevfev
kevfev I am very sorry to hear of your unfortunate experience in Camberwell Polly83.
It is not the most pleasant suburb in my view in terms of people and amenities. I was on Burke road with my mother and the vibe was one of ostracization, hostility etc...very unwelcoming...

I had coffee in Toorak village once, drove through Monomeath avenue and Mont Albert road Canterbury and have been through Hawthorn and Hawthorn East for a friend's birthday celebration- in hindsight, they are the best suburbs in terms of genuine hallmarks of true affluence and success as opposed to fake wannabe wealth and being a showoff, thankyou Orangebear.

People consistently state that Toorak is the most unpleasant place, I say the exact opposite. It has stability, structures in place and beautiful architecture and the people are OK. As is Canterbury and Hawthorn/Hawthorn East.

Those who dislike Toorak people in my view come from Camberwell- pathetically jealous and try to copy their successes without fruition.

"crusty old cardigan wearing anglosaxons" you mentioned Polly83; being Chinese and born in Australia, I should be free and within my right to purchase property anywhere. What a total piece of dull moronic residents they are in 3124...yeesh...and they're crusty because they write their own self-righteous comments in editorials hinging about how bad everything is. It is not.

Grow up and wake up residents of C***wh***hell...there is a bigger world out there in Melbourne and Australia!!!

"Young family loving it!"

We have just moved to the area and we are all absolutely loving it. It is just so peaceful! Yet so much to do with everything at our fingertips. Walking distance to Auburn Road Shops, Camberwell Junction, train station and Glenferrie Road. The people are extremely friendly, and very welcoming. My girls have settled in and loving their new lives. The local school (Auburn Primary) is fantastic! Not to mention the parks and sporting facilities..... Oh and of course - the shopping is brilliant!

"Beautiful and quiet"

Hi guys, being in the Roof Restoration industry I travel around quite a bit. I spend much time in Camberwell and find it to be a lovely suburb. It is green and peaceful, and it has great little shops that are close by no matter what part of camberwell you are in.
The houses all have individual charm.

Cheers,

Phil

"Fantastic suburb to raise a family if you can afford it."

Camberwell is a great suburb right in the heart of the Eastern suburbs. Nestled in between Hawthorn, Canterbury and Kew, it is the suburb of choice for many people living in Melbourne. Not quite as expensive as Canterbury, Camberwell offers a great lifestyle for growing families and many single renters.

Shopping is surprisingly good for a suburb in the location, with the Burke Rd shops being redeveloped recently with a JB-HiFi, Borders books and many more. There are also some fantastic restaurants in the area, especially in Camberwell Junction.

Houses can be very expensive in certain parts however, and therefore the demographic is generally wealthier people. As I mentioned previously it is great for raising a young family as it is also so close to some of the best schools in Melbourne.

You can't go wrong here...if you can afford it!

Highly recommended.

Very expensive area but a lovely leafy area to ive in. The main shopping area can get quite congested and the train ride feels long into the city due to a lot of stops. Shops are over-priced too. Nice area to live in if you shop elsewhere.

"A lovely suburb close to the city with ample public transport"

A lovely suburb close to the city with ample public transport. So it is easy to get into the city to work.
There are plenty of good shops nearby to get what you need. However, some of the shops in the area are a little expensive so it could be an idea to look further afield for your regular shopping.
This suburb has a number of character homes around which adds to its charm.
There are some nice parks close by making it a good spot for those with pets or children. Take them to the park and let them run free for a bit.
There are some reasonable restaurants close by if you want to have a nice meal out but they are not going to be on every street corner.
A good area for families and retirees.
Don’t forget the Sunday Market
