"I was wrong...."

Ok I'm coming back to review Caringbah with my tail between my legs. We have actually bought a villa in Caringbah and I now see what a nice place with friendly people it is. We are very happy living here now (off the Kingsway) and I regret my uninformed comments in 2010. We've met some lovely people and it's so nice and quiet with easy parking in our street. I can find everything I need up the road, it's not far from the city and you can even walk to the beach. There are still a few crazies around but there are in all suburbs. I would recommend it to anyone now that I've lived in the "burbs" part.

pfaidley What a bizarre comment, and totally incorrect. Caringbah is a diverse suburb (almost a small town in its own right) that encompasses the entire gamut of land use, demographics and society groupings. From the industrial areas in the north, which contain the bulk of the transport throughways, and the inevitable, inherent beavioural and social issues, to the green, waterside havens in the south and around the bays, Caringbah is an amazing microcosm of "Anysuburb, Australia".
The Kingsway is the main arterial route between Cronulla and the North-South corridor to the west. It is probably the busiest road in this district and is going to carry its own issues with it. The Kingsway at its eastern end in Cronulla, is almost a peaceful suburban street, with a varied and interesting streetscape.
Its commercial heart, in Caringbah, is a busy, vibrant thoroughfare, which has seen more than its share of high-density residential development.
Please dont criticize this wonderful area just because of a noisy street.
Caringbah has no more, and probably less of a 'drug problem' than many other locations in suburban Sydney.

CabinFeva I'm sorry...but I have to agree...it is a dump...the town centre is rubbish...there is nothing there...nobody goes there if they don't have to...only for chemist or banking...I lived there for 8 years and it has only got worse...iits dirty full of druggos and kids that vandalise and roam the streetsf it wasn't for Cole's and Wollies it would be nothing...it's a scary place especially at night...and the constant noises of sirens was unbearable...the neighbours were trashy and classless people....I think Caringbah is the ugliest suburb in the hire...a big thus down from me...

pfaidley Well, move. Caringbah central might be a bit run down, but the suburbs, particularly south of the Kingsway, are some of the loveliest anywhere in Sydney. Real estate prices are realistic, Value of homes remains stable. Its all +++ for Caringbah to live in.
By the way, it is illiterate people like you that give the whole "druggos and kids that vandalise" scene some validity. If you are going to comment with authority, then at least learn a language in which to communicate effectively.

"Close to the beach in the Sutherland Shire"

Caringbah was actually divided into two separate suburbs a few years back; Caringbah and Caringbah South. Caringbah is more convenient than Caringbah South and has all the major shopping, train station, restaurants etc. Caringbah South is a more leafy area, a little further away from the shops but very quiet (which is what people like about it). Caringbah South is the more upmarket of the two suburbs and has areas which adjoin the waterways of the Port Hacking and a good number of waterfront homes. Caringbah is just one suburb from Cronulla beach which is roughly about a 5 minute drive or you can catch the train. It is about a 40 minute drive into Sydney CBD and similar by train.
There are a number of good primary and High Schools in Caringbah. Three of our four kids go to Laguna Street primary (Caringbah South) which has a great name and we are very happy with it. There is also Caringbah and Burraneer Bay primary schools near by both of which have good names also. High schools close by include Endeavour sports high, Caringbah high (selective) and Woolooware high.
There is a good number of restaurants if you like eating out but Caringbah Hotel is really the only place that caters for those who like night life.
What we really like about Caringbah is the conveniences. There is Woolworths and Coles supermarkets, every major bank, Chemist Ware House, Bunnings, McDonalds, choice of medical practices, Sutherland Hospital, Kareena Private Hospital and Miranda Westfield is only 5 minutes away.
All in all, Caringbah and Caringbah South are great family suburbs. Go for the south if you like peace and quiet and are prepared to spend a bit more, but either way you'll enjoy all the benefits these suburbs have to offer.
Pros
  • Doctors & chemists
  • Access to public transport
  • Good for families
  • Great Restaurants, Banks, Post office
Cons
  • Hoons often hang around the station and Coles car park at night.
  • would advise to keep away from the flats west of the station

"Central Caringbah is a dirty ugly place with lots of social issues. Avoid it if u can"

There are many affluent areas in Caringbah but the town centre leaves little to be desired. It has all the amenities u could want but it is very run down and ugly. It is very scary at night, loud sirens, drug problems, vandalism lots and I mean heaps of sirens going all the time. If you have the money don't move near the town centre unless you have to There is no ambiance or beauty in downtown Caringbah. It is downright ugly. It is the Bronx of the shire but I guess it serves a purpose.

Vicko
Vicko I need to live on the southern outskirts of Sydney for my job which takes me down to Woolongong and Nowra frequently , but my clients are all come from greater Sydney. Caringah seemed to be a good location for me but frankly I was put off by the comments I read on these pages. I decided to check it out for myself ..
I was very impressed. Quite frankly, anyone who complains about Caringbah must have led a very sheltered life. The main shopping area is not daggy and run down....clean shops ...great eateries, nice wide streets and close to the beach. I had no hesitation in signing a lease on an apartment right on kingsway.

I love it

"Love it!"

I was brought up in Caringbah North. Contrary to some of the comments, it's a great place to raise kids, even now. 45 years later. Not too many areas that you still see children riding their bikes around the neighbourhood without the danger of some idiot hitting them. After my travelling, I married and settled in Caringbah South. Both areas have great schools for the kids, friendly neighbourhoods and just a general feeling of knowing that you living somewhere that very, very rarely has made the media for any reason. Close to the beach and the lovely Pt Hacking , what more could you ask. There are plenty of eateries in Caringbah. Maybe not top notch, but family friendly. I hear the odd siren, but it's usually an ambulance, and probably on its way to help someone, because of the proximity to Sutherland Hospital. Another bonus to all age groups. Not because of any violence. My son now lives close to the Kingsway and he does'nt not feel any trepidation where he is. Maybe some people look for the worst? I think we live in great part of Sydney. Hey I can think of hundreds of places I would rather not live in. Yes, there can be some drawbacks, but overall, its safe and friendly.

"Caringbah - the 'quiet achiever' of the Shire"

I grew up in Caringbah, and lived there until my early adulthood. I return there to visit friends and family every chance I get. I intend to return to Caringbah 'for good' one day, and will retire in the street where I grew up.
Caringbah was very 'suburban' in the 60's, 70's and 80's and became a desirable green space to move to from the mini-ghettos developing in the city's west and southwest. This resulted in an unfettered residental development close to the heart of caringbah (Kingsway/President/Pt Hacking roads). The suburb has recovered well from that hiccup and is now very much 'des. res.' as is shown by the stability of real estate values which have held their own and even risen during falls in other areas.
From the north side, heavily industrialised and with high-density shopping, to the leafy, green, quiet suburban havens in the south, Caringbah is everything you want to make of it.
Its not too loud, not too quiet, not too busy, not too peaceful.
I love Caringbah.

"Liveable, but not the best"

This is probably not the place for everyone, though there are some good things about the area(close to cronulla, shopping). I've lived here for eight years now and can realize it can be sometimes scary at night, especially in north caringbah. Busy sometimes while I usually commute out of the city and find that out, and a lot of people a moving here, so maybe im incorrect about the first line so hope this helps, good luck.

"ideal for families, with pretty welcoming streets"

If you want a quiet leafy suburb full of doctors, chain stores, take-away standard restaurants, and welcoming average australians, then Caringbah has it all. Easy trips to town (although the train trip is slow) for the more up-market restaurants and wine bars. And local pool at Lilli Pilli, and quick trip to Cronulla beaches. I have frequently left my house unlocked (latchkey kids!) and never any sign of vandalism or other delinquency. Quite bemused by previous review of lawlessness - perhaps would advise to keep away from the flats west of the station.

"Caringbah is on the way to Cronulla and has some great homes"

Great for kids to grow up in. The Caringbah Inn has a great counter meal for the family. Close to transport and great schools.

There are plenty of places to get a good coffee. Easy access to the water ways.
