Moving to Melbourne with family to live permanently

To anyone who can suggest/advise. I have been doing a bit of googling on Melbourne, did visit Mel in May and loved the place. Now we have decided to live in the East, renting at a rate of 340 to 380 per week. I know Zone 1 is out. However my eyes are on Eltham, Wattle Glen, Blackburn, North Ringwood, Watsonia, anywhere North East or South East, not too far out though. Would I be right in my choices of areas listed, would there be anymore that I could/should consider? I have kids, so main priority is a primary schooling, bus/train station. We do intend on getting a car when we do find a place. I have been told that I could go 25 to 30kms out from CBD to find afforadable housing as well. (which we are fine with, as I know Mel is a place of distances, with good public transport system) So over to anyone with information that would help. I will be moving around July next yr so thought I'd start the ground work right away. Thank you :)

If you want affordable, look at the Belgrave/Lilydale train lines, they are a bit far out, but great to raise kids in. I would not recommend Ringwood to raise children, honestly Ringwood has a habit of turning kids into druggies Heatherdale is basically Ringwood, but Nunwading and Mitcham are lovely and have great playgrounds, I don't know much about further in, but I do know that's where it starts to get expensive.
