"Considered the 'Bronx' of Adelaide"

Elizabeth is a northern suburb located 40 minutes out of Adelaide. Now, there is quite a few things to briefly discuss and most of them won't be positive. Actually, there rarely is something nice going on here.

Elizabeth is known for its reputation for having a very high crime rate, with lots of assaults and murders going on here. This is a place you would expect to hear some sort of crime happening on the news almost every day. The area itself stands out as filthy, appalling and even extremely embarrassing for the Adelaide Metro residents if tourists "decide" to visit. Elizabeth, including most of its surrounding areas like Davoren Park, Andrews Farm, Smithfield and some parts of Salisbury and Munno Para, etc, is a dump.

People, mostly local residents, in Elizabeth are very unfriendly and unapproachable and if you would visit this place or if you need to for whatever reason like I did, you would understand why. They are embarrassingly dressed. Nicely dressed for these people is an extremely rare sight but, I must admit, that there are quite a few nicely dressed people in the area (this is based on experience after having visited the Elizabeth City Centre once and wouldn't have the gore to go back).

Let's talk about amenities. Elizabeth has somewhat of good shopping options, including the major shopping centres in the area like Elizabeth City Centre and Munno Para Mall (also been here once as well), which probably (at Munno Para Mall) have slightly more decently-dressed and approachable people but still the same ferals and unnaproachable and unfriendly people, as you would expect. Elizabeth has terrible nightlife and so do most of the surrounding areas, so if your willing to drive 40 minutes into the city/beach for nightlife, it is so worth it. It also gets you far, far away from the ghettos, ferals, alcoholics and drunkned neighbours and streets of the night at Elizabeth. Parks and recreational facilities are often nice and they are quite wide and spread out around the area but, once again, ferals of the area dampening a family/kids fun time. Public transportation, however, is good with buses frequently running into Elizabeth and back into the city and vice-versa.

Schools and childcares in Elizabeth is *probably* (I never said it will be) going to be one of the worst educational experiences for your child. But if you do consider moving here and getting an education, a large proportion of schools include Craigmore South School (Craigmore), Salisbury High School (Salisbury North), Trinity College Gawler (Evanston South), Tyndale Christian School (Salisbury East), or, but a pretty bad decision as this school is notorious for, as Google Reviews say, "disorganisation and dramas", Hope Christian School (Craigmore). Trinity College Gawler at Evanston South is accordingly going to be your best option, as the staff and teachers are "approachable and warm".

Moving on, let's talk about neighbours. I discussed what the local residents are dressed as, and this pretty much goes for anywhere you go to in Elizabeth. Highly unapproachable, drug-related and can get extremely hostile for anything you do. Burnouts and hoons are too common here, with cars screaming past your house all hours of the night and loud pumping stereos with loud neighbours high on drugs and fights in the streets? Sure enough, that is enough to put you WAY off. The area is generally not very quiet as well.

Overall, a very depth review of Elizabeth, including that safeness is terrible, neighbours are very strange and hostile (including the local shopper resident), and a good night's sleep every night when you have to wake up at 6:00am the next day will leave you wondering why you never trusted this review in the first place, and as a non-resident, my experience of coming here for a day due to rebuilding my new home is enough seen for me to write this review. And while there really is nothing personally good about the area, setting the point brutally honestly, Elizabeth is an absolute DUMP.
Pros
  • Parks and recration
  • Cheap living
  • Wide open spaces
  • Zilch
  • Zippo
Cons
  • Local residents are rude, unfriendly and hostile
  • Schools have bad reputations in and around this area
  • 12 hours of the night right through until 7am, NO SLEEP AT ALL
  • Assaults and breakins
  • Burn outs and hoons
  • Drug dealing
  • Just about everything

JanHiggins STOPPED bagging Elizabeth and the Northern Suburbs? We live in the Northern Suburbs and it is fine. We visit Elizabeth shopping centre regularly and the people there are fine, yes you do see some strange sights, but Hell, I have been to Burnside shopping centre and seen some disgusting sights there too. Stop with the outdated stereotyping.

JimW2 I think you see lots of bad news about Elizabeth because it sell, people love to hear it. It makes them feel better about where they live with their enormous mortgage or high rent. I owe alot to Elizabeth from helping me be empathetic and non-pretentious to giving me the opportunity at 18 to buy a house for $57,000 (2001). Now I live elsewhere but if my financial situation required I would move back in a heartbeat before renting!!! I have seen much worse shops (arndale/kilkenny comes straight to mind)

"The heart of the north"

Elizabeth with it's low price of living and the vast range of amenities and services available make it both a good choice for living and for investing. Elizabeth Shopping Centre is one of the largest shopping centres in Adelaide and there are also numerous other amenities in the area. Home to the mighty Central Districts Football Club the area has a very strong following for football and this is obvious when you drive past the many schools in the area and you see all the footballs flying around.

nermal1 It's unusual I mention this but the price one pays for a house in Elizabeth today used to get something in the inner city.I remember as a kid My Mother taking me to see a Home in North Adelaide and they wanted $155,000 for it.Today It would be worth close to a Million Dollars. There are most likely other examples I could use.

"Elizabeth - The goods and the bads"

Before I moved from Elizabeth with my partner I had lived there for fifteen years. I grew up there as child and experienced school life and up until my twenties there... There is alot about Elizabeth that is not all that fantastic as other people have stated in thier reviews. Elizabeth is a massive suburb where some areas are less desired than others. I lived in Elizabeth Grove and enjoyed myself there and found it a nice place to live, yes there is a higher crime rate then other suburbs in Adelaide and alot of people that live there are in Housing Trust Homes. I dont think i'd go walking around after dark but you know what I wouldnt do that any in other suburb either.

The main shopping centre in Elizabeth is handy and has two supermarkets (Coles and Woolies), there is also a Myer, Target and Big W and lots of clothes stores if you want to have a browse. Munno Para shopping centre is pretty close to for Bunnings, Fantasic Furniture and Harvey Normans. Obviously when you're in a suburb with low income earners they are going to be at the shops, sometimes you think oh dear god when you see some people but to tell you the truth there are more well dressed and nice people around than 'bogans'.

I find Elizabeth mostly clean but in some places it is not. Street cleanliness varies from one street to the other, there are some areas in Elizabeth that i would avoid myself and would not go out of my way to go for a walk. Living is fairly cheap in Elizabeth and for families who are not that well off and want to buy thier own home there is alot of nice houses waiting to be snapped up, I've always thought about buying a little house in Elizabeth North, some are very nice.

There was never alot of noise around out neighbourhood but I cant speak for other areas because I only ever lived in the one house, I suppose it depends on what road you live on and who lives around you. But generally I think everythings pretty quiet. I havent ever had anything happen to me in Elizabeth but have been yelled at a few times by randoms but be cautious because there is more crime in this area and things do happen. Our house had never been broken into or robbed, we have a dog which has never had anything happen to her.

I dont want to go on too long and ramble but I think people only focus alot on what they hear about Elizabeth, if you do intend to buy property here make sure you get a feel for the area and who lives around. Good luck.

"A relaxed but growing city with friendly locals and all the services you need"

I've lived here for nearly ten years and have had a really positive experience. No trouble from the street and friendly neighbors who help us out when we go away by bringing our bins in, checking the mail, and keeping an eye on the house. The street is really nice lined with jacarandas that give a beautiful purple display in November and we have all underground power lines so it's very nice. It's 20 minutes to the city or beach so we have the best of both worlds. With an awesome shopping centre nearby, doctors rooms, large heated pools, library, theatre, cinema and restaurants I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

"An inexpensive area with fast food restaurants and low cost living"

A sprawling suburb about 30 minutes to the north of Adelaide, Elizabeth has long offered comfortable and inexpensive living with lots of facilities.

The CBD can be accessed easily by frequent trains and buses. The Elizabeth Shopping Centre has a wide range of shops and fast food restaurants, all of the low cost variety. There are a number of recreational activities in the region, including cinemas, the Aquadome (a large swimming complex) and ten pin bowling.

The Lyle McEwin Hospital is also nearby. There are a number of schools, including Elizabeth High School.

The area does have a reasonably high unemployment rate, and so there are a number of facilities to help the long-term unemployed.
