Crossing the broad Eske river at a point that is not suitable for crossing. Suitable places were usually narrower points of the river, and had a ford - that made crossing the river even easier.
This shows that Lochinvar was in a hurry and that he crossed the river at the earliest point but not the safest point - putting his own life at risk in his determination to save his beloved from a marriage and lifetime with a weak and a dishonourable man.
