For weekend getaways for Melbournians I'd recommend:
1. Taking a drive down the Great Ocean Road to see the 12 Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge and Great Otway National Park.
2. Sorrento and Portsea are always good for a beachy summer weekend break.
3. Going to stay in Mornington and unwinding at the Peninsula Hot Springs, Mornington's many wineries, and eating fish and chips on the beach.
4. Daylesford is a gorgeous country spot only 1.5 hours from Melbourne. The region has a number of great galleries, wineries, a lavender farm, spas, mineral springs and restaurants.
5. Driving to the Yarra Valley for wine and brewery tastings and up into the Dandenong ranges to stay at sweet B&Bs. Attractions include Yarra Valley chocolate and ice-creamery, going for a bush walk in the Dandenong Ranges National Park or the 1000 steps and going for a ride on Puffing Billy Steam train.
6. Even staying in the city at a swish hotel and going to a live show is great fun. I'd recommend the Sofitel, Crown Metropol or the Park Hyatt.
