"Planes, Trains and Automobiles . . . . but remember the upside."

Its definitely the best spot in Brisbane if you take away the planes, trains and automobiles (and the barking dogs) . . . . In fact' leave them in, because every suburb has its issues and for mine the pro's far outweigh the cons. Remember all the great restaurants, the fabulous seafood market, Oxford Street shops, there are about 5 Gyms, several great pubs, plenty of parking, bus, rail and ferry options, motorway and airport access, supermarkets galore, and Bunning's is just up the road. So is First Choice and Dan Murphy if you need help sleeping. It is near Carindale, has cheap fuel, lots of accommodation options and plenty of schools, both public and private. Its smack bang in the middle of everything you could want! AND . . . . . Don't forget folks. . . .. the new runway (2019) will take about 50% of the air traffic away from Morningside and dump it on East Brisbane, Bulimba, Hamilton and Eagle Farm. There is no doubt there are some noise issues, but we have sat down and looked at other options in the area and we would rather keep what we have at the price we got it for thank you.
Pros
  • Food glorious food , you need never cook again. . .
  • large blocks of land
  • Character homes and wide streets
  • 5km to CBD
  • Less than 1km in parts, to Oxford St Bulimba
  • Public Transport
  • Friendly neighbourhood
  • Green space and walking tracks
Cons
  • very, very, very poor political representation.
  • Being in the Brisbane City Council
  • overbearing development and poor governance over privacy for existing homes.
  • 24 hour Aircraft noise
  • every 2nd house has a barking dog, or two
  • many scruffy and untidy homes

"Great suburb, safe, peaceful and so close to everything!"

Inner City living! Close to 5 mins to Oxford St Bulimba, Cannon Hill, 10 mins to Newstead (Gasworks), City, Westfield Carindale and highway to Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast and 15 mins to Airport - can't beat this location. Glimpses of City Views, river close by, great food in the area, quiet streets full of people walking dogs and laughter of kids playing. Airplane flight path can be heard but with good insulation in the house it's not a bother, never affected sleep or enjoyment of the house. Many professional families in the area and more younger professional couples moving to the area. Safe suburb, never hear sirens in the night (as opposed to living at West End) and heard them most nights. Many houses being done up in the area as a new generation takes over. Plenty of local businesses supply all you need from beauty to business supplies, protein, plenty of food options, supermarkets, pubs, you name it. Plenty of parks and recreation areas!

"I Love Morningside"

Since moving to Brisbane we have rented in a number of different suburbs, and after moving to Hawthorne we wanted to stay in the area so settled in Morningside. It is the first time I have felt truly at home in Brisbane. However, I do have my issues. We pay a lot of rent for a house that is fairly down-trodden, and the possibility of buying in this area for a young couple, even though we have a large deposit ready, is impossible. Also; it is NOT a good area for cats. They die. I am not sure what the total cause of this is, but if you have cats in Morningside, leave them inside!! Besides these issues, I do love it here. I do not want to leave.
Pros
  • Southside Tea Room is easy to get to.
  • Everything you need to purchase is within 5 minutes drive.
  • Great area to live for vegans!!!
  • 5km to CBD
  • Less than 1km in parts, to Oxford St Bulimba
  • Public Transport
  • Friendly neighbourhood
Cons
  • Bad for cats.
  • People drive too fast, and park too close to corners.
  • A lot of neighbours think honking their horn is a good way of declaring their arrival.
  • 24 hour Aircraft noise

"Morningside has everything"

Morningside is the best suburb that I have lived in for so many reasons. It's convenience to everywhere is paramount giving easy access to all the great shopping areas around Brisbane, including the cbd, New farm, Carindale, Wooloongabba. the airport and the DFO and southbank. There is easy access to Moreton Bay if you are into boating which we are, we have the choice of putting the boat in to the bay 10 min away, or the Brisbane River, 5 min away. We have awesome city views and views over Hamilton and the gateway. We have the Seven Hills reserve closeby and all the other bike tracks around us, which gives us plenty of options for jogging and walking. All within 5 - 10 minutes away. Then there are the great schools, 5 of the top 20 Brisbane schools are within 5 km from Morningside, Seven Hills SS, CHAC, Churchie, Citipointe. There are great parks, great families = great life. We are very happy with our choice to move to this suburb which proves time and again to hold its real estate values.
Pros
  • Easy access to everywhere inner Brisbane
  • Easy access to some of Brisbanes best schools

"Morningside - city at your doorstep but trampoline in your backyard!"

It has the convenience of being close to the city while maintaining a relaxed suburban feel. Perfect for couples and families, is serviced by train line and close to shopping hubs. Great little schools and safe, friendly neighbours. We do have planes fly overhead at times (which our young son loves to spot) however we have never been interrupted or disturbed by the noise.....perhaps it is our position within the suburb but we also cannot hear the train at all.

"All Things Equal, A Great Affordable Suburb Close to CBD, and Gateway Motorways"

Close to CBD(less than 10 mins drive), 2 mins to Oxford St Bulimba, great train / bus services, increasing number of reasonably priced restaurants, lots of parks, and half the price of over-priced properties bordering Hawthorne, Balmoral & Bulimba (where one side of street is Morningside, & the other side of the street, one of these three suburbs in many streets). Definitely say the streets that run off Thymne Rd are more desirable than the other parts of Morningside around the Richmond Rd / Cannon Hill areas, but thats just an opinion. The only downside, as mentioned by others, is Morningside is right under the noisy flight path, and often planes are taking off right over the roof throughout the night 24/7. Why that is really necessary, & there isnt a noise curfew, I dont know. But all in all, Morningside is a well balanced suburb, which given proximity to CBD, merges with the prestiguous suburbs mentioned, and infrastructure, it will only be a matter of time in my view, that prices increase hugely.

"Quiet streets inner city, dogs, parks, cafes, families and friends"

Morningside has to be the best place I have lived in Brisbane...except when I was renting in Bulimba... Great cafes, local Dining, wide clean streets, big parks and close to everything. As the infrastructure grows this place will eventually become one of those unaffordable super trendy suburbs, but for now it's all good.

"Location Location"

We have lived in Morningside for the past two years now and it has surpassed our expectations. Considering it is only 5km from the CBD and is serviced by trains and buses and is closeby to cafes (including Bulimba/Oxford St etc - we live near the Hawthorne border of Morningside) it holds much better value for money than neighbouring Hawthorne/Bulimba (although these suburbs are extremely nice in their own right - but much much more expensive!). I can't think of many other suburbs I have seen in Brisbane real estate than have the same value for money whilst being 5km from the CBD and serviced by trains & buses (as we are close to the train station/flight path we were somewhat concerned during the buying process but we don't really hear it that much as we are used to the background sounds). The issue of noise is only noticeable during the day as I have never been woken/heard planes late at night/early morning. I would also add that if noise is a major issue for people then any area within 5km from the city might not be in their best interests (unless you can afford the likes of Teneriffe, New Farm etc). Medium density is certainly taking over the suburb with continuous new townhouses/units under construction which is a good sign that the area is in demand.

"A great place to rent"

Currently renting in the area - flights noticeable at times during day but not noticeable to us by night. I have friends in Bulimba, Norman Park who say it's no better there. We don't hear the trains but live more than 1km away. Overall the pros outweigh the cons for us. We also love taking our dog for a walk in the Seven Hills reserve and neighbours are very friendly.

Bacmac
Bacmac We have lived in Morningside 3 times. Once directly under the flightpath (we shifted as the noise did our head in), and 2 other times, where we were 1 km away, and the noise was only slightly better there. We have also lived in Bulimba and Hawthorne. The difference with these 2 suburbs is that you only get noise of aircraft landing (& distant noise as they take off & loop west over South Brisbane / CBD area at higher altitude) & no later than 10pm, when all aircraft switch to the instrument approach right over Morningside / Cannon Hill for takeoffs and landings (there is no reason why this need be the case, but try reasoning with Airservices Australia). No where in Morningside is further than 1 km from the main ILS flightpath which tracks over Asquith St, & Gatling / Shrapnel sts. There is no airport curfew in Brisbane. Occasionally there is recipocal takeoffs and landings over the Bay from 10pm - 6am, but regularly our house would vibrate (and our heads) from large 777 & 747 international jets taking off and landing from midnight to 6am, and that's when we were on the Morningside / Balmoral fringe, 1km from the flightpath. If you were immune to this & aircraft noise doesn't bother you, that's great. I am merely stating the reality. As you say, there are many pros for Morningside, but I suggest one of the reasons Morningside is far cheaper than neighbouring Balmoral / Bulimba / Hawthorne, is because of the constant arcraft noise (why else could it be? It's quicker after all, to drive from Morningside to the CBD, than it from Bulimba?).

Alldone
Alldone I have lived in Morningside for the past 4 years and have also never been bothered by aircraft noise at night, it has certainly never kept me awake or woken me early. True I do hear it of a day which I thought would bother me when I first moved here but I must have gotten used to it as now I hardly notice it. My friends at Hawthorne also experience overhead planes during the day so not sure if there is any quieter.

morningsideange Aircraft noise being an issue? Harden up! We live in a city, there's always aircraft noise. Even here it is far and few between, not that loud and it definitely ends before sleepy time. And, I live in Morningside but I am 1.9km away from the flight path, so, you're wrong. That is all.

""A Noisy Paradise""

Great being less than 10 minutes to CBD & closer to city by car than Bulimba, with great public transport, and excellent access to the Gateway. Less than 1km to Oxford St, and considerably cheaper than Bulimba, Balmoral and Hawthorne. However, that's where the pluses end. Noisy freight trains during the early morning hours. Worse, much of Morningside is either under or very close to the main flight path. As Brisbane airport has no nighttime curfew, that often means flights (including large international aircraft) in the early hours of the morning, eg 1-3am. Overhead flights then start again with a vengeance at 6am daily, with air traffic avoiding the more exclusive suburbs at noise-sensitive hours. Local MP Kevin Rudd was very vocal on the issue, but in recent times appears to have given up. However, If you can put up with the relentless noise - Morningside represents great value given proximity to CBD, public transport, and neighboring exclusive suburbs such as Balmoral, Hawthorne and Bulimba
