"Prestige Brisbane"

The locals know it - Toowong is a prestige Brisbane suburb. Close to the city and with everything you need, good public transport, shopping, schools (public and private), short distance to the University of Queensland. Also near to the excellent Indooroopilly Shopping Centre, though the Toowong Shopping Centre is excellent in its own right. I have lived in Brisbane nearly all my life and Toowong absolutely stands out. One of my favourite places on Toowongs doorstep is the wonderful Mt Cootha. Walking trails, road cycling, fully developed mountain biking trails and an amazing view of the city make it a joy to reach the top. The locals will tell you, Mt Cootha is like natures own gymnasium!

"Close to city but you wouldn't know it..."

I actually live on the street that is shown in the pictures. We are part of the community garden and its a huge asset to the neighborhood. We have two young kids and I rarely drive to meet friends, there are lots of friendly families and spaces for the kids to play freely. It is very dog friendly too with a dog park nearby. My husband rides his bike to the city for work and takes him 20 minutes door to door.

It is not cheap to live here but it is totally worth it.

"Best Pizza in Toowong"

I took my sales team from Ray White Toowong to dinner the other night, e all decided to have pizza at The Gourmet Pizza Shop in the heart of Toowong diagonally opposite The RE Hotel and next to Subway. Well every piece was eaten and everyone agreed it was the best pizza ever.

"Toowong - The North Sydney of Brisbane"

Toowong is one of the oldest suburbs in Brisbane and was settled at around 1870. The history of the name, Toowong, is a little ambiguous but there is no doubt it is Aboriginal in origin. Geographically, Toowong borders Mt Coot-tha, Bardon, Auchenflower, St Lucia, Taringa, and the undulating Brisbane River.

One of the first pieces of infrastructure built was the Toowong Cemetary. High Street was the home to the General store and post office and is still the main street of Toowong today leading out towards Moggill. Land Street was named after our friend Chris Land's great grandfather who ran the local ice works.

Toowong today is rich in amenities including the Toowong train station, buses and city cats. The iconic and picturesque Regatta Hotel and Boathouse restaurant sits proud on Coronation Drive. Not unlike North Sydney, but on a smaller scale, the shiny blue mirrored highrise named "Toowong Tower" is the next closest business district to the Brisbane CBD - being approximately 3 kilometres away and convenient to get to via Coronation drive and all the other public transport options.

"Toowong Village" is the lower 3 levels of the "Toowong Tower" development and is home to David Jones, Kmart, Coles, many retail stores and a large food court.

Toowong is home to one of Brisbane's most prestigious boys schools, Brisbane Boys College (BBC) which was founded in 1931.

Housing in Toowong has evolved over the past 140 years to include everything from workers cottages to grand Queenslanders, modern contemporary, and all types of units from small 3 storey walk ups to luxury one per floor riverfront apartments. The diversity available in Toowong makes it a popular choice for all demographics.

With a rich history and continued development, Toowong's popularity and charm are sure to endure over generations to come.

"One of my favourites"

SarahJaneS
SarahJaneS This is where I live currently, and have for the past 4 years. It is a fantastic suburb, particularly where I am on the border of Auchenflower. What I don't understand is your ratings?! You gave Toowong 2-Stars for shopping - have you been outside your house? There's not only a shopping centre (Coles, K-Mart, David Jones, Post Office, Fitness First, BWS, and at least 50 specialties) but almmost directly outside the centre there's a cute collection of fashion boutiques, thrift stores, novelty costume shop (!) and a Woolworths. 3-Star Public Transport? You HAVE TO BE KIDDING! For people who want to know: Toowong is definitely 5-Stars! You have a train station (with dedicated commuter parking) attached to the shopping centre, a CityCat stop opposite the Regatta (bar/pub) AND about every bus that goes to anywhere (including the 599/598 Circle Line). The rental value is almost disgusting it's so good, as every single professional and student wants to live there for the convenience.
Can someone please remove this crissy from the forum? They seem to offer NO helpful insight as to what it is actually like to LIVE in the suburbs.

Considering the area is so expensive, I don't think the area is affordable for most people.

"Toowong Cemetery downside"

Toowong with its close proximity to Brisbane CBD, nightlife, cafes, universities, schools and restaurants etc makes Toowong a great suburb. I recently looked at purchasing my own home in Toowong. The major downside I found was having a cemetery so close to home.

In many cultures to have a cemetery close to home can be seen as bad luck. On the upside property prices are lower than neighbouring suburbs such as Auchenflower and St. Lucia.

"Another great suburb"

that for some reason is ranked below some of Brisbane's most infamous suburbs. Who are the critics? If you want to drive around in your car all day then move to the boondocks. This is inner city living in very high demand -- people are voting with their wallets, see the price of property in this suburb. If you don't like it, you are in the minority.

"Its Busy, and only getting busier"

Toowong is a nice suburb, very close to University of Queensland, CBD, the Brisbane river. It has great shopping and entertaining with the Royal Exchange and Regatta hotels very popular with locals and students alike. There are many nice green streets with attractive character houses, but it really is the position which makes Toowong so desirable, so close to the city, the uni, walk by the river, catch the city cat to work in the CBD or even walk.

Toowong's main assest provides its main problem, being in the middle of everything the traffic is getting very bad, from Coronation drive on one side and Milton road on the other it can be a pain to try and get anywhere around rush hour. The uni also seems to attract a population of young drivers with loud vehicles at times. Overall a beautiful suburb but with serious traffic issues.

"Toowong - Great suburb close to CBD"

Toowong is a suburb close to the Brisbane CBD and stretching from the river to the uni, Toowong is only about 4 kms from the centre of the city. Being so close to everything you will never run out of things to do. Shopping is at a premium here with major shopping centres, malls and specialty shops dotted around the area, there is plenty of accommodation with motels and hotels in abundance. Visit the Regatta Hotel and the Royal Exchange Hotel as they are two of the oldest still operating pubs in Brisbane. There are excellent schools and colleges in the area and plenty of recreation venues. As with any suburb close to the city home prices are quite high.

"Busy but Lovely"

Toowong seems to be right in the the thick of things, but manages to retain it's charm and individual flair. Chock a block full of students from St Lucia, it's buzzing with energy and fun. There are some awesome restaurants- i.e Sushi, Italian, etc. The shopping is great with almost all of the retail outlets you could ask for. The main drag past the suburb, Coronation Dve, is a little bustley for me, but further west in the burbs are some cute character houses that ares till quite affordable. The pubs in the area are famous with Brisbane Uni students and the night life is sensational. Transport is great, with ferries, buses and close proximity to the CBD. I thoroughly recommend the suburb for anybody, from student to young families.
